Music Education
Music Education is a vital and vibrant part of our Curriculum. It is part of the learning area, Arts and Culture. This is a compulsory learning area from grade 1 to grade 7. Four talented music teachers lead our girls in singing, dance and music appreciation as well as training two choirs and two bands.
For many years Erica has been famous for its high standard of music. The first Erica windband was started by Linda Janse van Rensburg in the 1980’s. Erica has always been at the forefront of music in Port Elizabeth and our music pupils are sought after by the various High Schools in the city.
The school is presently offering tuition on the piano, on brass and on woodwind instruments. Pupils are assessed through a series of tests which assess basic music ability and talent. The girls are invited to join our Junior Band in Grade 4 from which they move to our well-renowned Senior Band. In 2008, the Senior Choir and Band were proud to record a very successful CD of their music which was an immediate sell-out! Their standard of performance can easily be measured alongside that of many high school bands. Their success can also be attributed to a well trained Junior band.
From Grade 2 girls are invited to join the Junior Choir and go on to join the Senior Choir – much sort after at weddings and other events in the city.
The music staff is extremely proud of the many achievements obtained over the years at various music eisteddfods and in external music examination. Throughout the year the girls are proud to share their musical talents with the rest of the school and with the public in Port Elizabeth, and further afield when on Tour.
Music is truly the Life and Soul of Erica!
